Trapped BobCat
Wednesday, December 30, 2009

CARMEL, N.Y. (AP) — Two Putnam County teenagers are accused of illegally trapping a female bobcat on watershed land owned by New York City.

Two boys, aged 17 and 13, were picked up by police when they were spotted checking the trap in the woods in Carmel.

The town's police Chief Michael Johns says New York City doesn't allow trapping on its property. The trap also was not labeled with the owner's name, as required by state law.

The boys' names were withheld because of their ages and because the charges are violations.

A man and his grandson strolling through the woods Sunday heard growling and found the animal with its left front paw in the trap.

The town's dog-control officers released the bobcat.

Bobcat pelts in good condition can fetch between $20 to $40.
